Today the card that landed is "The Core." About something inside you that doesn't break — even when everything around you has seemingly gone dark.

For a long time I didn't believe I had it. It felt like one more blow and that's it, I won't get up. I fell, got up, fell again, for decades. And only looking back did I understand: if I'm still here and still writing, then the core was there. I just couldn't feel it until they started breaking me for real.

The hard part is that the core isn't handed to you in comfort. It's tempered where it hurts. Until life shakes you, you don't know what you're made of. And when it shakes you, fear kicks in, and it feels like fear is the truth. But fear isn't you. It's a wave over the top of you. Under the wave, the same core.

What you can do today: in the moment you want to give up, or to start proving to everyone that you're worth something — stop and ask yourself one thing. Not "will I hold out," but "what am I even walking toward." If there's any answer at all, hold on to it. One step in its direction today. Not a feat. Just don't turn off.

Circumstances can't break someone who knows why he's here. They can bend him. Break him, no.
