From Above You See What Gets Lost Inside the Day

I shot this aerial view over Koh Phangan — the whole bay reads as one calm picture: the shoreline, boats at different distances from shore, water shifting from sandy to turquoise. And one person stands ankle-deep at the water's very edge, tiny in the frame, almost invisible if you're not looking closely.

Now picture what he actually sees, standing at that exact spot. Just the water in front of him. Not the curve of the shore, not the boats in the distance, not the shape of the whole bay — just the nearest few meters.

A leader inside their own day sees roughly the same thing: their current task, the nearest conversation, the nearest number. The shape of the whole business — where it's actually heading, where the real risk is, what's just noise — only becomes visible once you manage to step back physically. Not the figurative "I'll think about it tonight," but literally: stop, step out of the flow, look from a distance.

I know someone who leaves the office for an hour every week, no phone — telling no one, consulting no one. Not resting in the usual sense. Literally rising above his own day, like in this frame. He says every genuinely important decision of the past year came out of that one hour, not out of the flow of regular meetings.

This doesn't mean dropping everything and flying to an island. It means distance isn't a luxury or laziness — it's a working tool, without which the shape of your own business stays invisible from the inside.

Sometimes my role in a conversation is exactly this — to be that view from above for someone's own situation, for the length of one conversation.
