A heavy sky doesn't mean there's no light left behind it

This is the sky a minute before sunset, edge of Ubud. Almost the whole sky is covered in heavy gray clouds, dense, no gap in sight. You look at it and don't believe light could ever break through here. And then, at exactly one point where the clouds are slightly thinner, an almost unbelievable fiery light breaks out — as if the sky were burning from the inside. The clouds haven't gone anywhere. They still cover almost the whole frame. There's just one gap.

Health often works exactly the same way, except in years instead of minutes. Someone lives with a problem for a year, two, three, four. They get used to it, stop even trying to change anything, because a thought has settled in for a long time: since it hasn't gone away in so many years, it never will. That doesn't mean someone gave up on purpose. At some point, being used to the pain becomes quieter than the pain itself, and it's easier to live with that quiet than with a hope that might not come through again.

But getting used to a problem is not proof that there's really no way out. It's just exhaustion from looking for the gap in an overcast sky. Sometimes that gap is easier to see from the outside than from inside your own situation — not because someone else is smarter, just because they're not looking at the same sky from the same point you've been standing at for a thousand days in a row.

I'm not promising the light will break through the second you write to me. Sometimes a problem doesn't resolve instantly even once the cause is understood and named. But knowing exactly where to look is already a very different thing from staring into a solid gray mass with no point of reference at all.

Five minutes later this same sky looked completely different — but in the moment this photo was taken, that was almost impossible to believe.
