Nothing gets rushed on rice terraces — and everything grows.

Sidemen valley, eastern Bali. Terraces stepping down to a river, mountains on the horizon. I came here almost every morning that month, just to sit on the edge of a field and watch.

Here everything happens on its own schedule. The rice comes up when it comes up. The water flows downhill by itself. No one stands over the field with a stopwatch shouting "faster, I put money into this". The farmer does his part — plants, clears the ditches — and lets go.

We don't know how to do that. We push. On relationships — "why hasn't he proposed yet". On money — "it's been six months and no growth". On a decision that "should have been made yesterday". And we get angry, we burn out, and then decide "I'm not good at this" and "it's not for me".

Half the questions people bring me are actually about exactly this. Someone is carrying something that just needs time — and wearing themselves out doing it. They're convinced they're not trying hard enough. The reading usually shows the opposite: they're trying too hard, at a point where effort no longer changes anything — it just burns through their resources.
